For two days now, there has been an Airplane flying over Lisbon, It travels from the North West to the South East then back, South East to North West. Is this Plane checking for Pipeline routes or is it being used for seismic testing, The plane has a long pole sticking out from its nose and it fly's very low.

Or, it is that time of year that the gov't flys around looking for marijuana patches using a grid pattern.

Almost certainly seismic. I can't remember the details . . it's been a few years. Somebody else here will know.  But you for sure can do seismic from above.

It's invasive in my view.  Data on my land should not be available to the industry without my specific permission.  I always had the same problem when the thumper trucks came by over the years.  Cause if they discover your land is not prospective they will not offer you a lease.  Better to get your lease and get your bonus money and then let 'em test.

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

No Frank, there is no such thing as an aerial seismic survey.

Seismic surveys utilize sound waves, unless the airplane was dropping large explosive bombs (with precision) every 15 seconds - this could not have been a seismic survey.

What country driver likely witnessed was an aerial magnetic survey.

Yeah, on reflection you must be right.  Thanks for the dopeslap.

I was remembering . . poorly . .  something I read a few years ago.  I know there is some kind of testing, or surveying, or whatever, they can do from above that relates to drilling.  But I cannot pull together the details any longer.  You're right, though, it cannot be seismic per se.

Saw similar plane last week along Rt 8 in Pa near Franklin pa

It's a blue and white twin turboprop with a probe that is about 10 feet long. I saw it flying over Mahoning, and Columbiana Counties last week.

The probe was thin. Not big enough for any real equipment. Maybe a magnetometer, or an air probe. I really didn't think it had anything to do with drilling.

Whatever it is, the probe is long to protect from interference. It could be protecting the aircraft from  probe interference, or it could be protecting the probe from aircraft interference.

I'm an aircraft mechanic. It wasn't anything that I recognized off hand.

ODNR is also dropping small packets for rabies control. 33 news did a short segment on it. I found one of those small packets in my back yard in southern columbiana county on Sept. 19th. The planes also fly back and forth.

I have no idea what the planes look like this year.

Google earth doin' updates.

Probably looking for that fugitive that knocked the Sheriff down.  Just sayin.

Sounds like the sensor for a magnetometer located at the end of the "stinger" at the front of the airplane.

The instrumentation and recording equipment can be quite distant from the physical sensor.

There are technical reasons why one would want the physical sensor to be isolated and distant from the more magnetic portions of the airplane and at a distance from electomagnetic fields.

Due to the presence of the long stinger (probe), my bet is that the airplane was envolved in some type of geophysical survey.

All IMHO,

Hey, maybe they will find gold,

could be the stealth spy plane from coexprise looking for more landowners to sign up.....
