Severance Tax Ohio, Tell Them No !

The budget process is under way in Columbus. As part of his proposed budget Governor Kasich proposed increasing the severance tax. As we know this puts an unfair burden on the backs of land owners who receive or will receive royalties. We must let our legislators know we are opposed.

Please make a call or send an e-mail to your state rep and state senator voicing your opposition to this tax increase. Don't make it a long message, just state your opposition and thank them for their consideration.

No new or increased taxes.
Industries taxed will simply inflate the sell price of their commodity to offset their hit. Government will use the revenue to grow itself. Landowners will see more pressure to lease for less.
Consumer prices will rise. Inflationary politics.
No new or increased taxes.
It's never enough, they will never be satisfied.

This group should try and reach out to Ohio Farm Bureau to help fight the severance tax, I believe they have taken an official stance against the severance tax as well

And if this editorial from the Cleveland Plain Dealer doesn't FIRE you into ACTION nothing will.  Working against a severance tax is going to be a war and I don't think we have seen the first real battle yet.

Why aren't the politicians severance taxing Ohio industry like GM Lordstown on  their car output or V&M Star on their steel pipes, or Smuckers on their jelly, or GE on their light bulbs,  Lockhead Martin on their aircraft, or Goodyear on their tires?

Call NARO (National Association of Royalty Owners) and ask them where they stand.  Ask them if they are going to help the Ohio mineral/landowners to maintain their mineral interest against a severance tax.  

Do you think the income earned off the O&G industry down to royalties will be taxed enough as it is?  Or do we need taxed even heavier?  Don't forget additional Obamacare taxes may apply to royalty income. Share your thoughts with each State Senator and Representative, and the Governor's office.  You will need to ask for constituent services when you call the Governor's office.

When you call your State Rep and Senator ask for their position on the Governor's proposed Severance tax.  Put their response on your local GMS county page as a new post (this is important!!) and share their answer on this post as well.  Tell their Aides you want a direct answer on their position as it relates directly being against or for a severance tax.  Don't settle for a wishy-washy letter or response just thanking you for your concern and how they want to do what's best for Ohioans.  Keep calling until you get a firm answer.  

If they say they just want to protect the environment, which is what they will say, remind them this is accomplished with coal mining through a bond type program, which the mining company gets their cash back after successful compliance with reclamation.  The program is supposed to be revenue neutral.  However, with a severance tax, I believe the objective is to raise vast amounts of additional revenue through taxation.

Do nothing, expect nothing (but the worst).

The goal of the increased severance tax is more votes. The Governore and his supporters intend to use reduced income taxes as a campaign tool in 2014. He won't tell anyone he paid for the reduction on the backs of royalty owners.

I think rural Ohio is the Governor's core, based on demographics.  I don't know if a populist message will work.  We saw from the presidential election some Ohio precincts vote 100% one way no matter the message.  However, the Governor's core supporters are rural Ohio's mineral owners, landowners, and farmers.   Any State Rep or Senators representing these areas depend on this support as well.  I wonder what the effect of redistricting will have on the Utica area districts when it comes to weighing the importance of the landowner/farmer/mineral owners' voice.
