Does anyone have an update on Shell’s (SWEPI) Hook Run well in Mead Township, Warren County, PA?  It’s my understanding that drilling began a while ago.  It’s also my understanding that they were targeting the Upper Devonian (Rhinestreet) shale layer.

The report I have seen says the rig started drilling the 5HM lateral on 5/29/13. They have seven drilling permits for that site, I don't know how many of those have been drilled.

Swepi has two Hook Run permits targeting the Utica, two targeting the Marcellus, and two targeting the Upper Devonian (Burket Shale). The 5HM well has a spud date of 3/25/13. Swepi recently received a deviated well permit for the 5HM and that is apparently what the rig is currently drilling. That well is targeting the Marcellus and is the only one of the six permits that has been spud. I attached the well plats and permit & spud report for the Hook Run Wells.

I was by there two days ago. Apparently they had just cemented in the lower casing and the upper casing was in the rack. I heard this rig will be moving down to Lawrence shortly. I heard they have another rig set up at Buzzard Swamp near Marienville. Shell has a very active exploratory program in Forest, Elk, McKean and Warren counties with nine locations with multiple permits. They are working on the Corydon location now and have one more (Angel Swamp) to build. One of their wells off 948 in Elk County flared for about 60 days.

Oliver thank you for the plats. Very informative.

You're welcome James, as you know I take a special interest in Swepi operations, especially in Butler County. I didn't know of the Hook Run wells until now even though I camp in the area every August.

We need a rig soon in Butler for the Renick Pad which has been under construction for three weeks now. There is currently a Swepi rig in Lawrence County at the Twentier Pad drilling the 4HS lateral.

Few items: That was the first well on this pad. I do take an interest in Shell as up North they appear to be the only game in town. From my observation they are behind up here as compared with  your area. It seems wasteful to move the rigs around like they are doing but this is exploration and they want to test as they go along. I was surprised to see they are targeting the Burkett up here. The Genesee is above it and is thicker. The Tully is below which will act as a good frack barrier so I think they will be fracking into both the Burkett and Genesee. Where they are drilling the Rhinestreet is very thick. I am surprised they are not taking a crack at that. I heard they were moving down to Lawrence, but things are very fluid and changes are made all the times. On this site they added a permit a week before they moved onto the site. Thanks again for the Plats. They will be looked over by a number of people who know more than I do.

Keep us abreast of any i/p numbers. Will be very interesting what the numbers look like. Hopefully it sparks a lot of attention in the area.

SWEPI appears to have a particular interest in siting their well pads on public lands (i.e., Allegheny National forest).  Given that most of their Northwest PA drilling sites are on public property, I would think that their lease terms are also public.  Would anyone know where to begin looking for type of information (i.e., their lease terms with the State/Feds)?

MWS; while the land their drilling on is public, the gas rights were retained by private entities when the ANF was created. So most of the leases are private and not available to the public. This was a bit of  a controversy when O & G development  started in the 70s and 80s.

I am surprised to hear that there is so much activity up that way. Amazing how many areas are benefiting form this.  Also good to hear a rig is headed my way to Lawrence Co. And idea where to?

Always glad to hear there's a rig drilling in Lawrence , that's for sure!

Shell has built 8 pads in Forest, Elk, McKean and Warren County. Three more are being built. There are multi permits on each pad. Upper D's, Marcellus and Utica are permitted. They have drilled about 8 wells this year on six of these locations.  One well off of 948 in Elk county was flared for sixty days. Very impressive flare. From what I can tell everthing is exploratory. They are too big to tell the public about the details.

I take it they are sharing results of data with other companies. Seneca is active in the area. Both Hunt and CHK have recently permitted wells in the area. PGE brought in Patterson to drill a deep well deep in the forest between Marienville and Kelletville.

I believe they moved the rig on the Warren site to Mercer not Lawrence. They have what appears to be their own rig (Shell #1) drilling in McKean. It looks like a double which they might have selected because of the roads they have to navigate to get onto their site. They are or have set up to frack a well near Kane.

Unfortunately other than Seneca we will not get public reporting. Others are private or too big. What I post is what I have seen and inferred.

Jesse,
Can you share with us the location of these Gamelands and the highlights of the terms: Bonus amount , royalty , compensation for well pad , etc.? Thanks in advance.
Glenn

The ANF or "National Park Service" is not a party to the lease . What Jim Litwinowicz   posted above is correct. However , SWEPI did not lease the parcels in the ANF, they own the OGM rights which were acquired from their purchase of the assets  of  East Resources.
