The company completing the seismic survey should take care of that testing for you.  They should hire an independent third party to perform the testing.  I'm not sure how useful a water test would be if it is collected by the homeowner, other than for their own personal knowledge.  You should actually do this annually anyway.  For the seismic testing though, let the company pay for this service.

Property owners should definitely require pre- and post-seismic water well tests be completed before and after the seismic survey is done.  Tests should at least test the water for basic parameters and also the performance of the well.  That way, if quality and/or quantity were to be affected, it will be documented.

In the package I received was a map of my area with my land boundary highlighted with red squares running northwest-southeast and blue circles running west-east but nothing indicating what they mean. Also they gave me a web sight to go to for more information with a user name and password. I went on but user name password wouldn't work.

I guess I'd also request detailed maps of the area being tested and precise charge placements and sizes (probably after the fact), just in case a problem develops, and you need some evidence.  As a contributor, you should be entitled to such information, but I bet they're not used to sharing it:-)

I've been told by a landowner in Lawrence county who's nicely leased that seismic testing is a bigger potential risk to groundwater than fracking.  I was hoping to have some independent baseline testing done on my water before they start bouncing the strata around.  Note that, unlike fracking, most of the energy, and thus disturbance is near the surface, and my understanding of the laws of physics would indicate that mapping formations as deep as the Utica is in these parts will require sending a strong signal down to get a viable echo back up.  Has anybody here done baseline water tests on their own?  Could you make that part of the seismic test contract?

$53,000/sq mi works out to a little over $82/ac.    i can't believe they would do it that cheap

Berk, Diversified Land Mamagement Inc. has been contracted to begin detailed seismic mapping through Crawford County. Your area and the area around the Range Lippert well are the focus areas at this time. This is a positive sign for the energy potential of this area. Properties are gridded, small charges set off and seismic readings made.  It costs the energy companies about $53,000 per sq mile in cost before landowners are paid their acreage fee

I received in the mail today a letter and documents to sign from a company by the name of SEITEL wanting to pay me 5 dollars an ac. for a seismic survey. This for Crawford, Venango and Mercer counties. Survey is called Cooperstown Phase 1. Any comments/input would be welcomed.

david, i wish i would have knew about the timber sale, since that is what i do for a living. oh well  i guess i cant buy them all :)

David, Thanks for clearing that up.  I guess somebody thinks that land will both lease with a big bonus and drill quickly - otherwise that's a pretty skinny profit margin.  On the other hand, if the Utica is good (e.g. $3900 bonus), that would be like buying a house and selling it at an 18% gain in one to 3 years, with any royalty income purely gravy.  It's been a while since real estate deals like that were common.  Since this will be a recorded transfer (right?), will mineral values now start to become part of comp appraisals?  Anybody?
