All in a Typical Day with Benzene

Sue Mickley

Environmental Protection Committee Chair – Northern Wayne Property Owners Alliance; MPH/HA – Yale University

Benzene is one of those chemicals we hear about often in the discussion over natural gas development. It is said to be leaking from compressor stations and polluting our air, by those opposed to the development of this clean burning resource. Realistically, not only have benzene levels been proven to have little or no connection to shale gas development but…

NRDC Plays Victim and Runs from Debate with Krancer

No one ever accused Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secreatary Mike Kancer of being a cuddly fuzz-ball, but he’s hardly someone you’d expect a Senior Attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), where they spend nearly $100 million annually fighting everybody, to run away from, either. Yet, the mere compilation by Krancer, of a set of compelling facts disputing an NRDC report, caused NRDC’s Kate Sindling, normally a firebrand given to all sorts of…

Poorly Vetted Shale Gas Attack Fails

This week there was a presentation at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on the impacts, or lack of impacts, on animals as a result of natural gas development. The event was hosted by the Wilkes University Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER) , which has typically done a good job of maintaining a balanced, unbiased approach in their research on Marcellus Shale development in Pennsylvania. The speakers for this particular event, Dr. Robert Oswald and Dr.…

The Misinformed Actions of Anti Natural Gas Activists

For those of us who have been participating in the natural gas debate over the last few years, talking with anti natural gas folks can feel like you’ve been placed in a scene from the movie “My Girl.” It’s a classic from my childhood and one I loved and still love to watch, but let’s face it, Veda’s method of dealing with hard times and things she doesn’t want to hear wasn’t the most constructive behavior. Yet, in this discussion, I often feel like I’m watching an adolescent stick their…

Ingraffea Unleashes Tiger Snarl on Capitol Hill

During a congressional briefing this week Dr. Anthony Ingraffea offered his opinions on onshore natural gas development to an audience composed largely of congressional interns and environmental activists. Cornell staff made clear Ingraffea’s remarks were his own when they mentioned they weren’t reflective of the University.  At the time I thought it was a standard disclaimer, but it turns out there was good reason for its use as Ingraffea quickly launched into a tirade.

It was one…

Delaware, NY Dives Into Property Rights!

Last week, the Town of Delaware, New York, Sullivan County passed the recommended natural gas resolution composed by the Joint Landowners Coalition affirming their commitment to allow safe, responsible natural gas development in their community. Residents in Delaware feel they should be able to choose what they do with their property and mineral rights. A landowner’s property is their biggest asset and investment, something we all work to improve and hold on to. These residents are more than…

What Every Contractor or Trucker Wants to Know About Oil/gas Field Insurance Compliance But Doesn't Know Whom toAsk

Oil field opportunities for contractors and truckers are exciting.  There seems to be plenty of good paying work if you have the skills and equipment.  There is one more thing that you will need to succeed – special insurance to comply with contractual insurance specifications.…

Faulty EWG/PSE Hydraulic Fracturing Claims Debunked New Part II

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Physicians, Scientists and Engineers for Healthy Energy (PSE) released a ten point document criticizing the SGEIS.  This is the second part in a two part series examining that document which serves as an example of why environmental activists are having difficulty maintaining support in New York.

They say that necessity is the mother of all invention, watching the debate over natural gas development in New York it becomes apparent…

NIMBYs Turn on Fractivist Friends Over Compressor

Rachael Colley attends surprising anti-gas event regarding Hancock Compressor Project:

The Town of Hancock, Delaware County, New York is the proposed location for a new compressor station on the Millennium Pipeline. Naturally, local anti-natural gas forces are opposed. What, after all, is there to which they’re not opposed? They held a meeting among themselves to organize against the compressor station last Saturday in Long Eddy, New York. They even brought in Matt Walker from the…

It's About the Kids, Stupid!

Bryant LaTourette says it's alla bout the kids:

Remember, me? I started the Oxford Land Group. The Oxford coalition has since merged with the Central New York (CNY) Landowners Coalition. I am one of the original past founders of the Joint Landowners Coalition of New York (JLCNY). I helped put together the first rally (Pass Gas!), which was a great beginning. Together we stood in Albany on that cold rainy day. Every day since, many of us have been working at some capacity to help…

Natural Gas Industry Supports Communities Where It Works

School ends, Summer begins and rural communities come alive with events. These events are a great way to experience something different and give back to the community at the same time. One thing these events have in common is that they bring together many community members, including the natural gas industry and others with a stake in the region. It might be said no company is an island and the natural gas industry provides a great illustration.

Joe Massaro recently had the pleasure…

Truthland Heads Out to Josh Fox's "Backyard"

No, Truthland hasn’t been shown in New York City, at least not officially, although a recent fear-inducing endeavor by Fox leads us to believe it’s certainly being watched in the Big Apple. This screening, co-sponsored by the Northern Wayne Property Owner’s Alliance and Energy Citizens, took place at the Beach Lake Fire Hall in Wayne County, about four miles away from the Fox family property (his father owns it). Around 100 people came out to watch the movie and get their questions answered…

Debbie Preston, Broome County, NY, Executive Says Yes to Gas

Rachael Colley and Joe Massaro, EID Marcellus Field Directors, went to Binghamton, New York to conduct an interview with Broome County Executive Debra Preston. Preston keeps her office open to her constituents every Tuesday from 9 am to 11 am, so we were fortunate enough to get a chance to speak with her during her busy day! It’s refreshing to speak with someone who has taken the time to learn about something so important to the Southern Tier as natural gas development. Debra Preston not…

There Ought To Be A Law (Continued)

Two more prominent anti-shale activists turn out to be natural gas users!

This is the third in our There Ought To Be A Law series of posts.  We documented, in the first piece, the fact Tony Ingraffea, Mayor Matt Ryan and Josh Fox all used natural gas to heat their homes or offices.  …

Vic Wants His Neighbor Back, If He'd Just Get the Facts

Vic Furman wants his neighbor back and urges getting the natural gas facts:

"Together we stood, when snows fell so heavy, and then we would work together to remove that heavy white stuff. We then relaxed over hot chocolate, sometimes sharing a glass of ginger brandy. We were friends! Together, we faced the challenges of raising children, as our children became best friends who would skin their knees in the fields and fall from trees in the forest, we would wipe the abrasions clean,…

The Sun Also Rises for Josh Fox, But Not on Command, Time for Him to Get A Grip

The sun also rises for Josh Fox, but not on command. Time to get a grip, Josh!

They say that 82.3 percent of statistics are made up on the spot. Watching the video released by Gasland star Josh Fox this week – cleverly titled “The Sky is Pink” — one wonders whether that figure might be in need of a slight upward adjustment.

Set aside the distracting, out-of-focus camerawork and characteristically creepy, overwrought narration, and the argument that Josh and his team attempt to…

Loose Cannon Gets His Facts Wrong on Franklin Forks

Most of us have heard or, perhaps, used the term “loose cannon on the deck.” Meant to describe an individual prone to bounce around firing at will – a threat to friend and foe alike – it is also an apt term for some of our opponents from Luzerne County who seem determined to misrepresent what happened in Dimock and now what’s happening (actually, not happening) in Franklin Forks. Remember when you visited one of those historic forts as a child and they fired a cannon for you? It was only…
