Divorce Pending: Can Natural Gas and Renewables Survive as a Couple?
by Keith Mauck
The natural gas lobby has pinned much of its future hopes on the ability to serve as the "faithful partner" to renewable energy, primarily wind and solar. T. Boone combined natural gas with wind - before dropping the wind. A visit to the
Natural Gas Aliance's website, and you find that they have staked their postions on the ability to wed natural gas…

ShureLine Construction was one of more than 700 that attended Tri-County Oil and Gas Expo. The originally anticipated attendance of only 250 was a severe underestimation with the ever growing fervor surrounding the Marcellus Shale play. The pinnacle moment of the weekend seemed to be the mixer held at the Hilton Gardens in Southpointe where presenters…

The Marcellus Shale play has clearly been a game changer, not just in America's energy situation but in a range of businesses that are directly involved in the geophysical, drilling, pipelining, transportation and their legions of suppliers. We assume (correctly) that this cast of professionals can take what was until a few years ago inexpensive pastureland and turn it into a functional gas well providing natural gas and revenue for years. But when it comes to the press and to many people in…

Penn State's indefatigable Professor Terry Engelder says both sides of the environmental debate are exaggerating. The natural gas E & P companies minimize the risks to groundwater--there are a few, such as drilling into pockets of methane gas that can produce milky-looking well water. Some environmentalists have attacked
hydro-fracturing as if it were a proven source of water contamination (it's not). …

4 sons have inherited mineral rights (along with other heirs) in Greene Co. (Gilmore Township) Since there are many people involved that know nothing about any of this, everyone is really floundering. All have signed leases, but contact with the leasing company (Domain E&D) is not very good. Because of the pending and closing of the sale to Consol on (April 30) . Does anyone know if any drilling has started in Gilmore Township, and what we can expect from Consol. Help.

Williams is rumored to be meeting on April 22 to formulate their "gameplan" for landowners in Lycoming county. More competition = more money. After speaking to a landman representing Williams, they are searching for tracts of 320 contiguous acres for development. Some offers from them are allegedly anywhere from 4000/ acre 18% to 5500/ acre 20% royalty. Justin McCarthy with Thomas Development Corp. (412) 926-3315 is representing Williams in this area for anyone interested. The royalty rate…

A 20% increase? In Chemung County NY? Hah! Airport is booming, hotels, restaurants, folks are spending money. In the Star Gazette (4/15/10) they failed to mention OR even suggest the fact of those "gas well company's" setting up shop here in Horseheads are responsible for it! The folks they employ, houses they purchase, the money they spend. Now as you all are aware of- NYS is BROKE. Being the "blue" state we are, NYC has spent every dime.. Little old chemung county…

T. Boone appeared before the Ways and Means Committee to tout the benefits of the Natural Gas Act (NAT GAS Act). Legislation that would provide incentives to get CNG & LNG big rigs and utility trucks on our roads.
The legislation would pursue a 5-year goal of 236,000 natural gas trucks (heavy, medium, and light duty) in operation which would displace an estimated 2 billion gallons of…

Sue is right! With the new hydraulic fracturing technology proving efficacious, Washington should give priority to shale gas exploration. Of course the vulnerable areas should be restricted for environmental reasons, but with its dropping cost of exploration, Shale is the future - RK

If the object is to lease only the Marcellus, the lease should only include the Marcellus shale and strata 100' above and below that formation.

I'm close to signing a lease for my property in SW Butler County. I requested a top and bottom depth severance. The addendum came back with A top severance of 400' above the tully formation to the surface and the bottom is below the base of the Oriskany formation. What are the approximate depths of these formations in SW Butler County? Also Is the bottom depth deeper than required for the Marcellus? Is the company getting the next gas producing fromation included at this depth?

I am having a hard time understanding how chesapeake expanding units from 640 acres to 800 plus acres would help me. We were originally with Anadarko lease which specified 640 acre units. Chesapeake bought out lease and are asking to modify to 800+ acres for $10. Chesapeake claims royalties would be greater. Thanks.
