Baseline Water Quality Testing - Marcellus Shale Development What Parameters Should be Tested?

For the past 20 years, I have stressed the importance of private well construction standards and getting your water tested for your private well or water source. Because of the specifics concerns with respect to the Marcellus Shale, the citizens are recognizing the importance of documenting the baseline quality of their drinking water and recreational water sources.…

Gas firms get environmental warning as Marcellus drilling grows

Gas firms get environmental warning as Marcellus drilling grows was an article I sat aside and today I picked it up again. As I was rereading this article written by Rick Stouffer on May 4, 2010 about a Marcellus Shale meeting held at Duquesne University. I was at first amused, then angered by the repeated comments made by John Hanger, PA Department of Environmental Protection Secretary about the 180,000 acres…

Aquifer Contamination-Part 2

Dear Shalers,

In Part 1 of the Aquifer Contamination discussion we explored the pro's & con's of the proposed drilling that is expected, and seemed to have come to several observations:

1) Drilling is good for the economy and produces jobs and revenue

2) Drilling techniques have been used for a long time, and the fracing process is non-hazardous

3) The drilling can cause contamination when proper procedures are not followed

4) The companies doing the drilling are not… Continue

Marcellus Shale Unit or Pool Size Limits

I brought up this subject recently in the Tioga County, Pa. forum, but I feel I should raise the issue to a wider audience. As I am informed, there seems to be no law in Pennsylvania limiting the size of a unit or pool around a given well. The assumption is that the unit will be around the size of a section - 640 acres- a square mile. Some units are a little bigger or smaller, depending on the geography of the actual drilling of the well's horizontal leg. If unit size is limited in a given…

Lets Keep Developing Marcellus Gas in Pennsylvania!

2009 was a boom year for Marcellus shale gas exploration. Will the good times continue in 2010?

For Pennsylvanians, shale gas exploitation is jumpstarting the economy of the chronically depressed northern regions of the Commonwealth. Jobs, lease fees and associated gas industry spending are already giving the region’s economy a much-need boost.

Benefits of shale gas production are not limited to Pennsylvanians; all Americans stand to gain from the gas bonanza.… Continue

Gazprom Executive Slams Future of U.S. Shale Gas Production (and who’s surprised?)

Russian energy giant Gazprom’s deputy chief executive, Alexander Medvedev, belittled the future of shale gas production, suggesting the break-even price for shale projects is too high to be commercially viable.

Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he?

Gazprom is the largest extractor of natural gas in the world and Russia’s largest company. The energy giant supplies about one-quarter of the European Union’s (EU’s) natural gas. For some countries, Gazprom has what… Continue

Tipping Point for Marcellus Shale Gas?

A few weeks ago, Energy behemoth Exxon/Mobil purchased domestic natural gas supplier XTO, a company heavily invested in the Pennsylvania shale gas business.

On Wall Street, XTO share prices rose following the merger announcement. Indeed, the value of many companies involved in domestic shale exploration surged on the news of the purchase. The XTO purchase is the most significant acquisition Exxon has made since they purchased Mobil back in 1999. What does this thirty-one… Continue

A Little Help Needed - Breaking into Marcellus Opportunities

I work for a heavy highway construction company that is interested in breaking into the Marcellus activity around PA and WV. We are looking to get into well site preparation, access roads, and possibly anything else involved in the early stages of well production. I have been to many websites and recently attended the PA Natural Gas Summit at Penn State, but wanted to see if anyone on here had any good ideas on obtaining info, making contacts, or breaking through into the natural gas industry.… Continue

DOE Primer on Shale Gas

This new report from DOE is a really great "101" on Shale Gas. Its long, but its worth the read if you really want to know about the extraction of shale gas. It is not specific to the Marcellus.

Happy reading.
