The Town Board of the Town of Callicoon, New York, Sullivan County held a public hearing last week on their draft Town of Callicoon Comprehensive Plan. We’ve seen a few comprehensive plans recently that were meant to do little more than lay the groundwork for zoning out natural gas development, leading to unintended consequences, but this draft plan, while it hardly gives a carte blanche approval of it, is actually open to natural gas exploration in Callicoon. Unsurprisingly, the…

A few weeks back my wife called to say a helicopter had earlier landed in our neighbor’s backyard. This would have been unusual anywhere, of course — but especially so in a residential area of Honesdale. Being nosy neighbors, we crossed the street to find out what happened.
As it turns out, according to our neighbor, his unexpected drop-in guests were from Duke University, of all places — and were apparently in the area to do some “research” on natural gas. My neighbor, who is…

Today we celebrate the most important day in our nation’s history, our Independence Day, when the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the day that changed us from colonists to Americans and proud citizens of the United States. Today, 236 years later, Pennsylvania is still at the forefront of the fight for our freedoms,…

My favorite part of the Fourth of July festivities is definitely the fireworks extravaganzas. Growing up, my family would go down to Wegman’s parking lot for the annual “Set the Night to Music” display in Williamsport, and to this day when I hear the song “Proud to Be An American,” I get excited thinking of the grand finale.
What I never thought about while I was “oohing” and “awing” was how they make such amazing, vibrant colors-at least not until the other day when someone sent me…

Sue Mickley says she gets annoyed when people say they don’t want their drinking water ruined by natural gas development even though there has never been a documented case of drinking water contamination due to hydraulic fracturing. Lisa Jackson, EPA Administrator, in fact has said “In no case have we made a definitive determination that the fracking process has caused chemicals to enter groundwater.”
They also don’t seem to understand the aquifer is not one body of water underground,…

This past Saturday was the 3rd Annual Northern Tier Marcellus Business Expo at Alparon Park in Troy, Pennsylvania. As in years past, the event was a great opportunity for many local businesses to promote themselves and local residents to…

Benzene is one of those chemicals we hear about often in the discussion over natural gas development. It is said to be leaking from compressor stations and polluting our air, by those opposed to the development of this clean burning resource. Realistically, not only have benzene levels been proven to have little or no connection to shale gas development but…

No one ever accused Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secreatary Mike Kancer of being a cuddly fuzz-ball, but he’s hardly someone you’d expect a Senior Attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), where they spend nearly $100 million annually fighting everybody, to run away from, either. Yet, the mere compilation by Krancer, of a set of compelling facts disputing an NRDC report, caused NRDC’s Kate Sindling, normally a firebrand given to all sorts of…

This week there was a presentation at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on the impacts, or lack of impacts, on animals as a result of natural gas development. The event was hosted by the Wilkes University Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER) , which has typically done a good job of maintaining a balanced, unbiased approach in their research on Marcellus Shale development in Pennsylvania. The speakers for this particular event, Dr. Robert Oswald and Dr.…

For those of us who have been participating in the natural gas debate over the last few years, talking with anti natural gas folks can feel like you’ve been placed in a scene from the movie “My Girl.” It’s a classic from my childhood and one I loved and still love to watch, but let’s face it, Veda’s method of dealing with hard times and things she doesn’t want to hear wasn’t the most constructive behavior. Yet, in this discussion, I often feel like I’m watching an adolescent stick their…

During a congressional briefing this week Dr. Anthony Ingraffea offered his opinions on onshore natural gas development to an audience composed largely of congressional interns and environmental activists. Cornell staff made clear Ingraffea’s remarks were his own when they mentioned they weren’t reflective of the University. At the time I thought it was a standard disclaimer, but it turns out there was good reason for its use as Ingraffea quickly launched into a tirade.
It was one…

Last week, the Town of Delaware, New York, Sullivan County passed the recommended natural gas resolution composed by the Joint Landowners Coalition affirming their commitment to allow safe, responsible natural gas development in their community. Residents in Delaware feel they should be able to choose what they do with their property and mineral rights. A landowner’s property is their biggest asset and investment, something we all work to improve and hold on to. These residents are more than…

Oil field opportunities for contractors and truckers are exciting. There seems to be plenty of good paying work if you have the skills and equipment. There is one more thing that you will need to succeed – special insurance to comply with contractual insurance specifications.…

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Physicians, Scientists and Engineers for Healthy Energy (PSE) released a ten point document criticizing the SGEIS. This is the second part in a two part series examining that document which serves as an example of why environmental activists are having difficulty maintaining support in New York.

Rachael Colley attends surprising anti-gas event regarding Hancock Compressor Project:
The Town of Hancock, Delaware County, New York is the proposed location for a new compressor station on the Millennium Pipeline. Naturally, local anti-natural gas forces are opposed. What, after all, is there to which they’re not opposed? They held a meeting among themselves to organize against the compressor station last Saturday in Long Eddy, New York. They even brought in Matt Walker from the…

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. Or, that farm on which blood, sweat and tears have fallen. [ Read More ] |
