Paul, You might find the attached Marathon pipeline map interesting. I'm sure you know that Marathon Petroleum has a refinery on the soth side of Canton, which is visible from rt 30.

I have seen quotes by the CEOs of Shell and Chesapeake stating that they are drilling the periphery of their acreage in order to establish the boundries of the core area. Notice that most of the wells being permitted are for both a vertical (to get sample cores) and horizontal (which they will use the vertical to the desired depth) to put into production. It is also possible that the wells being drilled are very close to trasmission pipelines (which is where they normally will drill first. One last thought is that they might be drilling on old leases that they acquired which will soon expire if they don't drill and get them held by production. Just my thoughts....
