NEXT MEETING OF HCOLG SCHEDULED.  We're having another informational meeting to explain the landowners group and talk about the current status of leasing in Ohio. Tell your neighbors. We will also
be discussing how we can network together as lease-holders as we move into the gas production phase. There will be an opportunity to ask questions, and landowners can join our group. If you have any questions contact Dan at dellis@hcolg.org. Spread the word.  Note that we're having it on Friday this time instead of Saturday.

PLACE: Cadiz, Ohio, St. Teresa Activity Center, 143 E. South St.
DATE: Friday, June 17, 2011
TIME: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

I agree Josh, it doesn't really seem appropriate or even necessary. If the State owns the mineral rights under the park and they want to get some revenue to help fund the park system, then they can just sign a no-drill lease and become a part of a drilling unit. Because of horizontal drilling, they can have their gas extracted without any surface disruption. On the other hand, some of the state forests are thousands of acres, and there is no way to reach underneath to extract all the gas from a drill pad outside the forest lands. So I guess I could see a case for limited drilling in the very large forest sections. After all, a 5-7 acre well pad (later reduced to 1-2 acres) can drain 1000 acres. That's a fairly minimal impact for some much-needed revenue that could go toward preserving our state forests and parks. There are only a few places in Ohio where that would apply though. For the vast majority of our forests, and probably all of our parks, I would say that we should not drill on them, especially since there is no need with horizontal drilling.

Here in Harrison County, the State does not own the mineral rights under Harrison State Forest. The Buell Well lateral does extend under the forest, and so will the Jewett Sportsmans Well. Given the layout of the forest, I see no need to consider drilling in the forest, since all of its minerals can be reached with horizontal laterals.

I think we should avoid drilling in parks and forests what are everyone else thoughts.  That was the whole purpose of these areas, plus that will force them to drill more on private property.  I am all for drilling but lets not forget why we established parks and forest.

Debra, the toll free number on the website is the best phone to use.  It seems that email works better than phone for me, but you could try anytime during the day.

JT, we try to keep a network going with the other landowner groups around us, since our goals are the same and we may be able to help each other.  We are definitely in touch with ALOV.  Their lease document is by far the best we've seen signed around here, so the draft lease on our site is based on it.

Now that you are leaseed (assuming Chesapeake pays) if you are interested, HCOLG is also continuing beyond negotiating leases and into supporting the rights and protections of those who have signed leases and are now royalty owners.

Dan, I look over the lease on hcolg.org and it looks like a copy of the ALOV lease.  Is HCOLG a sister group of ALOV?  We have 12 acres in Rumley Twp and recently signed our acreage with the ALOV group.

Thanks Dan. That's what I thought and just wanted to confirm it.   I took a look at your lease.  It looks quite good and I also looked over the Harrison County Landowners Web Site.  I would like to speak with you if you have some time.  When is a good time to call you?  Should I call the number on the webite?  Debra

Debra, just about everyone has been told that.  That's Kenyons standard operating procedure.  First they offer you a "boilerplate" lease document, then when you raise some issues they start offering you addendums from their pre-authorized, canned list of addendums, until you think you have gotten enough concessions from them that you will sign.  They are not authorized to allow you to change the wordings of any of the addendums, nor are you allowed to attach your own.  The Kenyon/Chesapeake lease even with addendums is very weak.  Fortunately, they are not the only option.  If you read over this lease and compare it to theirs you will see there is a world of difference in almost every aspect of the document ranging from Pugh clauses, to landowner control, to water protection, to payment structures.  It is not in your best interest to deal directly with a landman.  Check out the Harrison County Ohio Landowners Group.  There is power in numbers.  Don't let a landman pressure you by saying that all your neighbors have already signed, or that you need to sign now because they are leaving the area.
